Moms group teams up with Dane Co. to support kids affected by gun violence

Empowering Youth Amidst Tragedy: Moms on a Mission Offers Community Support

In the wake of recent gun violence incidents that have shaken Dane County, a community-based group, Moms on a Mission (M.O.M.), has partnered with the county to provide support and resources for the youth impacted by these tragedies. The group's mission is to ensure that no young person feels alone during these challenging times.

Restoring Hope and Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Addressing the Emotional Toll of Gun Violence

The members of Moms on a Mission, many of whom have children attending Madison's East High School, understand the profound impact that gun violence can have on young lives. Following the tragic shooting of East High School sophomore Kyesha Miller in October and the mass shooting at a downtown graduation party earlier in the summer, the group recognized the urgent need to support the students who were directly and indirectly affected by these events."The kids are very open, and they need us," said Noelle Brusky, co-founder of Moms on a Mission. "They need community. They are hurting, they are scared, and they don't know how to verbalize those emotions." The group's goal is to provide a safe and nurturing environment where young people can express their feelings, find solace, and begin the healing process.

Fostering a Sense of Community and Belonging

Partnering with Public Health Madison & Dane County, Moms on a Mission has organized gatherings that offer a range of resources and activities to support the youth. These events feature free food, refreshments, games, and the presence of several mental health-related organizations, all with the aim of creating a welcoming and inclusive space for young people to connect and find support."We feel like this is a way, following an incident like what happened at Lux, to sort of have a little bit of a touch point with youth across the board who may not have been directly affected, but are feeling some of the issues related to gun violence and aren't super comfortable coming forward," said Randy Molina, the Violence Prevention Response & Engagement Coordinator with PHMDC.

Recognizing the Evolving Challenges Faced by Today's Youth

Shadayra Kilfoy-Flores, who attended East High School and now has her own children enrolled there, acknowledges the stark differences between the challenges faced by today's youth and her own experiences as a teenager. "You know, fighting at the park was different than it is today," she said. "And so, our kids are facing a lot more potential violence, gun violence specifically. That was not as much of an issue, certainly when I was a teenager, than it is today."The Moms on a Mission initiative aims to address these evolving challenges by providing a supportive network and resources that empower young people to navigate the complexities of their environment and find pathways to healing and resilience.

Fostering Collaboration and Community-Driven Solutions

The partnership between Moms on a Mission and Public Health Madison & Dane County represents a collaborative approach to addressing the impact of gun violence on the community. By combining the grassroots efforts of the community-based group with the resources and expertise of the public health organization, the initiative seeks to create a comprehensive support system that caters to the unique needs of the youth affected by these tragedies. This collaborative approach not only provides immediate assistance but also lays the groundwork for long-term solutions that address the root causes of gun violence and empower young people to become agents of positive change in their communities.
