Comoros Stepping Up to Host the Prestigious 2027 IOIG

Challenges Faced by Comoros as Hosts

Immediately after his appointment, Mohamed Issimaila openly discussed the difficulties faced by Comoros. As he pointed out, the time factor is a significant concern. With a limited timeframe, there is a lot to be done to ensure a successful event. From coordinating with various teams to setting up the necessary infrastructure, every aspect requires careful attention. The sports organisation itself also needs to be in top shape to handle the demands of the games.

Moreover, the IOIG holds great significance for Comoros as it is the first time the event will be held in the country in its 45-year history. This presents a unique opportunity to showcase the nation's capabilities and promote regional cooperation through sport. However, it also comes with its fair share of challenges.

Preparations and Key Focus Areas

Under the leadership of President Azali Assoumani, efforts are underway to make the 2027 IOIG a memorable event. Chinese contractors have been drafted in to construct a 50-meter length basin for the 40 events planned in the swimming pool. This infrastructure will be crucial for the success of the aquatic events.

Accommodation for the athletes and tourists is also a top priority. Ensuring comfortable and suitable living arrangements will enhance the overall experience of the participants. As President Assoumani warned, deeds matter more than words. There is no room for mistakes in the preparation process.

Lessons from the 2023 IOIG in Madagascar

The 2023 IOIG in Madagascar served as a valuable learning experience for Comoros. More than 2,000 athletes from seven countries participated in 17 disciplines, showcasing the diversity and talent of the region. Madagascar's success in topping the medal table with 121 golds in their haul of 272 prizes is a testament to their preparation and organization.

Comoros, although finishing further down the medal table, has learned from this experience and is determined to improve. The hosting rights awarded to Comoros on 31 August 2023, just a few days before the end of the Games, gives them the opportunity to make a mark on the international stage.
